In the Bag: Baby’s First Outing

You’ve been home for a bit with your new bundle of joy, and perhaps feeling a bit antsy. When you’re ready for a little time out of the house, you’ll want to take everything (just in case), but this packing checklist is a great starting point for baby’s first outing.

In the bag:

  • Make a Change Baby Bag (includes a built-in changing pad and plenty of pockets)
  • Baby Bottle Caddy (keep milk and formula cool on the go)
  • Diapers and Wipes (you’d rather have too many, than too few)
  • Medium Cosmetic (assemble a traveling first aid kit with baby pain reliever, a bulb syringe, thermometer, diaper cream, etc.)
  • Bib Set (you can never have too many bibs in the bag)
  • Pacifier Pod (keep that bink clean and close by)
  • Plush Blanket (soft, with a pretty colorful trim, this is perfect to take along)
  • Lovey Bunny  (a little comfort creature from home)
  • Ruffle Bodysuit (always pack a backup bodysuit)
  • Mary Jane Soft Shoes (pull her petite ensemble together)
  • Baby Socks (cover those ten tiny toes)
  • Ditty Bag (the best place to toss dirty clothes, dirty diapers, dirty bibs … you get the idea)

  • My oldest daughter was breast fed until 11 months old and never took a bottle. With Daughter #2, breast feeding did not work out and she was on a bottle, but I did not have a “take a bottle with you” mentality. The first time we left the house, I did not take one and ended up racing home with a SCREAMING baby. Did not ever make that mistake again. My advice: be sure you can feed, change and entertain them with what’s in the diaper bag! Every night when you get home, repack immediately for the next day, because you WILL NOT have time in the morning. Always have toys, snacks and at least 2 changes of clothes. And carry a diaper bag with a pocket that you can put your wallet in – diaper bag and purse in one. Only one thing (other than the baby) to carry.
