Twenty years of the Classic

Twenty years of the ClassicIn June, we will proudly celebrate 20 years of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer Classic Women’s Golf and Tennis Tournament. We asked Executive Director of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer Catherine Hill to reflect on how far this amazing fund-raising event has come and what we can expect in 2013.

Then and now …

The first year, the Classic raised $64,000 and included a total of 35 volunteers from the committee and community. We were a small group, so we all did every part of the planning and the event. For instance, if you were on the golf committee, you were also working at the tennis event, organizing the silent auction and the dinner. Now, we have more specialized volunteers (350 last year) focusing on specific aspects of the event; we’ve learned that “many hands make light work.”

While we always add a fresh and surprising element or two, the basic aspects of the Classic haven’t changed a bit, and we love it that way. It’s truly a tradition and, for many, an annual homecoming. They know to expect a high-quality sporting event, full of fun and friendly competition and camaraderie for a great cause. It just keeps getting bigger and better.

Twenty years means …

That we’re serious. It’s a big investment of time and resources to host a sporting event of this magnitude. When Barbara and Patricia first pledged to help, we used a tagline: “Courage, Compassion, Commitment”. Each of those words still hold true in relation to Vera Bradley’s commitment, which is stronger than ever. But what 20 years means to me, most importantly, is that, though there is still work to be done, there has been unbelievable progress when it comes to how we diagnose and treat breast cancer today vs. in 1993. I know so many healthy and strong survivors of this disease. Because of research, breast cancer is quickly becoming treatable and beatable.

The year ahead …

In 2013, our goal is the same as every year. We hope for a full field of golfers and tennis players, happy and helpful volunteers, generous sponsors, healthy survivors to honor and celebrate, and sunshine, of course!
