Everyone needs a place to detox from the stress and demands of the typical weekday wear. For Catherine Hill, Executive Director of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, that special getaway is a fourth-generation lake house on Burt Lake in northern Michigan.

When the weekend arrives, the family packs their Large Duffels (Catherine uses one and her two children share a second), throw them in the back of the car, and head upstate.

Ribbons – our latest Breast Cancer Awareness color* – is her pattern of choice these days, and, of course, we had to ask if we could take a look inside.

Her cotton quilted travel essential is packed with all the lovely tools needed for a few days of unwinding lakeside: A bathing suit, reading materials, a sun hat, sunglasses (Margarett in Floral Nightingale), athletic shoes and clothes for hikes and biking, and a nice shirt for dining out at the family’s favorite local eatery, Vivio’s Pizza.

“Growing up, I was actually a waitress at Vivio’s,” she said. [Prepare for a really cute story.] “That’s where I met my husband 24 years ago. He was a bartender there and one night, he drew an outline of the lake in flour and asked me where our house was. I guessed, but I think I was pretty close. Turns out, he lived straight across on the other side of the lake! He had been right there all that time.” The couple just celebrated 15 years of marriage this summer.
